County of San Luis Obispo
Working for the County of SLO you’re challenged with reaching a diverse population.
You can’t make everyone happy. But you can still craft an effective message.
Welcome Home Village
In order to address local homelessness in the City of San Luis Obispo, the County and local agencies are developing a new supportive housing solution, Welcome Home Village.
But public support is needed to ensure the program’s success.
A diverse combination of print collateral (tri-fold brochures, postcards, and even door hangers) was produced to share public information. The underlying strategy here hinges on addressing objections and guiding nearby readers to the project website via QR codes and URLs.
Point-in-Time Count
The Point-in-Time (PIT) Count is a biannual, nationwide event where folks experiencing homelessness are counted on a single night.
To get an accurate PIT Count, the County of SLO needs to recruit and train volunteers.
A message of “Volunteer with Others” and testimonials were used to position the PIT Count as a community affair with a purpose. This narrative was successful in targeting local community leaders and drove initial volunteer recruitment beyond previous years’ sign-up rates.

Broad Street Place Grand Opening
On a sunlit afternoon resting in shaded chairs, locals celebrated the newest affordable housing complex in Morro Bay - Rockview at Sunset.
Residents shared their stories of arriving to Rockview at Sunset and guests were inspired. In these stories were laughs, tears, and stirring thanks to those addressing a stark reality.
Morro Bay, like other parts of SLO County, needs more affordable housing.
People are struggling to find housing and some are even experiencing homelessness. This is a reality that Rockview at Sunset is ready to change.
Supporting the San Luis Obispo Countywide Plan to Address Homelessness, the new Rockview at Sunset is a 34-unit community for low-income families and individuals owned and managed by the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo (HASLO).
In the coming months, residents can also enjoy supportive services and classes. These will focus on key areas like education, nutrition, and even financial literacy.
To apply for the Rockview at Sunset waiting list , or if you’re looking for more info, go to rockviewmorrobay.com.

Rockview at Sunset Grand Opening
People’s Self-Help Housing held a grand opening last week for Broad Street Place, a housing project highlighting San Luis Obispo County’s housing future. Broad Street Place is a mixed-use property that features commercial spaces, community rooms, and 40 affordable housing units. Once fully occupied, Broad Street Place is expected to house approximately 80 community members.
Broad Street Place aims to provide its residents with more than just housing. By having supportive services and case management available on-site, residents can regularly connect with trained professionals while enjoying the benefits and freedom of independent living.
A huge congratulations to People’s Self-Help Housing, the Broad Street Place residents, and the community for the future success of this affordable housing project.

No-Cook Bags
🍽️ Those in our community experiencing homelessness lack access to kitchen and equipment needed to safely store and cook many nutritious foods.
To help solve this problem, the SLO Food Bank developed No-Cook Bags. No-Cook Bags Ty contain foods that don’t need any cooking or cold storage to be enjoyed. Best of all, it’s specially curated for those experiencing homelessness – each No-Cook Bag meets a person’s caloric needs while still being tasty.
No-Cook Bags are thoughtfully filled with food for people with nutritional and dental challenges. The meals and snacks commonly found in a No-Cook Bag are things like:
🍗 Chicken salad kits
🥜 Peanut butter
🍇 Dried fruits
🍨 Yogurt
All the food in every No-Cook Bag is bought by the SLO Food Bank.
🤜🤛 These No-Cook Bags are given out all throughout SLO County with the help of partners like the SLO City Mobile Crisis Unit, CAPSLO, and 5Cities Homeless Coalition.
🤝 More importantly, No-Cook Bags have been a tool for agencies to connect with people experiencing homelessness. These bags of food build a relationship that encourages folks to take part in supportive and caring services.
